How to market a dispensary without getting banned on Meta

Brianne Dezzutti Jun 12, 2026 6 min read

You post a 4/20 sale to Instagram. By morning, your account is restricted - or gone. No warning, no appeal that goes anywhere, and the audience you spent two years building is locked behind a login you can't access. If you run dispensary marketing, you've either lived this or you're one post away from it.

Here's the hard truth and the useful one in the same breath: the platforms will never officially let you advertise cannabis - but you can still market a dispensary aggressively and grow, if you stop fighting the rules and start building around them. This is how.

Why dispensaries get banned (it's not random)

Meta's policy prohibits the promotion of cannabis - full stop, even where it's legal. Their enforcement is largely automated, looking for signals like the plant, the product, prices, and "buy" language. It doesn't read your state's laws or care that you're licensed. A compliant, legal business gets swept up by a content filter built for a federal prohibition.

So the goal isn't to "post carefully and hope." It's to build your marketing on ground you actually own, and treat the big social platforms as a top-of-funnel brand channel that can disappear at any time - because it can.

Move 1: Own your audience before you need to

The single most valuable move a dispensary can make is move customers off rented land and onto owned channels - email, SMS, and your Google Business Profile. These can't be deleted by a content moderator.

If you take one thing from this: an email and SMS list is the asset; social is the billboard you're renting.

Move 2: Market the brand and the experience, not the plant

On public social, the brands that survive sell everything around the product except the product. Think lifestyle, education, community, and culture - not buds, prices, and "shop now."

What tends to keep accounts healthy:

What gets accounts flagged:

The mental model: social earns the follow; email, SMS, and your menu earn the sale.

Move 3: Run SMS that actually sends

SMS is the highest-converting channel a dispensary has - and the one most operators break without knowing it. Mobile carriers run their own filters, and cannabis-adjacent words ("cannabis," "weed," heavy discounts, certain promo phrasing) can get your messages silently blocked - you're billed, nobody receives it, and you never find out.

The fixes are real but unglamorous: use a compliant SMS provider, keep clean opt-in records, watch your wording, and always include opt-out language. Done right, SMS is your most durable, most profitable channel. Done wrong, it's an invisible money leak.

Move 4: Win local with Google Business Profile

A huge share of dispensary demand is "dispensary near me" - high intent, ready to buy, searching on Google or, increasingly, asking an AI. Your Google Business Profile is the storefront for that moment. Keep it complete, accurate, and active (posts, hours, photos, reviews) without tripping the cannabis-content rules that can get a listing suspended. This is quieter work than chasing virality, and it converts far better.

What to never do

Protect the account you have

Treat your social accounts like infrastructure that can fail: secure them (two-factor, multiple admins), back up your content and audience, and keep the email/SMS list current so a ban is a setback, not a catastrophe. Resilience is a marketing strategy in this industry.

The shortcut

Everything above is learnable - but it's a lot to run correctly, every campaign, across every state and platform rule that changes without notice. That's exactly what Asterisk is built to do: tell it the marketing move you want to make, and get back finished, channel-ready copy, flagged safe for your state and platform - so you can market like you mean it without betting the account every time.

Start with a free state audit: I'll review your current marketing against the rules and show you exactly what's risky and what I'd fix.
