Generative Engine Optimization: how to get cited by AI

Working at a laptop - optimizing a brand to be cited by AI search engines

Search is becoming answer. When a customer opens ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overview and asks what to buy, they don't get ten blue links to choose from - they get one synthesized recommendation, and a short list of brands the model decided to trust.

For twenty years, marketing was about being seen. The next twenty are about being chosen - by the people who matter and the machines they ask. That shift has a name: Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) - the practice of structuring your brand so AI answer engines understand it, trust it, and cite it. This is the guide.

What is GEO?

GEO is the work of making your brand the answer an AI engine gives. Where classic SEO optimizes to rank a page in a list of results, GEO optimizes to be the cited source inside a generated answer. The unit of victory changed: not position #1 on a results page, but a mention - by name - in the paragraph the AI writes back.

It matters now because answer engines are eating the top of the funnel. AI Overviews sit above the organic results. ChatGPT and Perplexity are where a growing share of "what should I buy / who should I hire" research happens. If the model doesn't know you, or doesn't trust you, you're not in the consideration set - and the customer never even sees the gap.

GEO vs SEO: what's the same, what's different

GEO is not a replacement for SEO - it's the next layer on top of it. The fundamentals still feed both.

The same: quality content, clear structure, technical health, and authority all still matter. AI engines are trained on, and retrieve from, the same web SEO has always served.

What's different:

How AI engines decide what to cite

Different engines work differently, but the pattern rhymes. They retrieve sources relevant to the question, then synthesize an answer weighted toward sources that are clear, corroborated, and consistent. In practice, you get cited when:

  1. Your facts are structured and unambiguous - what you do, who it's for, where you operate, what you cost, what proof you have.
  2. Those facts are echoed by sources the model already trusts - reviews, directories, press, reputable mentions.
  3. Your story is consistent everywhere the model looks.

Miss any of the three and you become "a brand the model has heard of but won't confidently recommend."

In AI search there's often only one answer. If you're not it, you're not in the conversation.

The GEO playbook: four moves

1. Make your facts liftable

Put your core facts in plain, structured language on pages built to be parsed - a clear About, FAQ sections, and schema markup. Write answers, not adjectives. "We're an award-winning, innovative leader" is unliftable. "Asterisk builds compliant cannabis marketing systems for dispensary operators; engagements start at a free state audit" is liftable.

2. Earn third-party citations

AI trusts sources, not your homepage alone. This is where most brands stall - and where the work pays off. Get named, reviewed, and described accurately in the places the model already reads for your category: industry publications, directories, podcasts, expert round-ups. Every credible mention is a vote the model counts.

3. Answer the real questions

Find the exact questions your customers ask AI - and answer each one better than anyone, in a citable format. A page that cleanly answers a real question can become the source the model quotes for thousands of variations of it.

4. Stay relentlessly consistent

One name, one description, one set of facts - on your site, your Google Business Profile, your social bios, your press. Contradictions are how you lose trust you didn't know you had.

How to measure GEO

You can't improve what you don't watch. The simplest method costs nothing: run an AI Visibility Audit - a set of prompts you run across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI Overview - and score whether you're mentioned, recommended unprompted, accurately described, and cited from your own sources. Re-run it monthly. The needle you're moving: more engines naming you, fewer wrong facts, more citations pointing back to you.

Common GEO mistakes

The brands that win the next decade earn human pull and machine trust at the same time. GEO is how you build the machine half - deliberately, before your competitors do. Start by running your free AI Visibility Audit to see where you stand, or get The GEO Playbook for the full step-by-step build.
