Reddit is the most-cited site in AI search

Earning Reddit citations in AI search

Reddit is the single most-cited domain in AI search. If you want to be the answer an AI gives, you eventually have to deal with that - and the way most brands try to is the fastest route to getting banned and ignored.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of getting cited when someone asks an AI a question instead of typing it into Google. I wrote the full framework in the 2026 guide to generative engine optimization. This piece is about the one source that shows up in those answers more than any other, and what to actually do about it.

The numbers, and what they mean

Independent citation studies published through 2026 - Peec AI across roughly 30 million sources, Profound across 1.4 million citations, plus SE Ranking and Semrush analyses - keep landing on the same finding. Reddit ranks first among cited domains across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.

The concentration varies a lot by engine:

Treat those figures as directional. They move month to month and the methodologies differ. The stable fact underneath them is the one that matters: when a model wants evidence that a real person tried a thing and formed an opinion, it goes to Reddit.

Models cite Reddit because it reads as lived experience. That is also exactly why faking it does not work.

Why this matters more if the ad platforms already shut you out

If you sell cannabis, supplements, injectables, or anything else Meta and Google won't take money for, you already know the two-rulebook problem. You can't buy reach. What you can do is earn it in the places buyers actually research - and for restricted categories, a startling amount of that research happens on Reddit, precisely because the brands can't advertise there either.

So the channel is doubly valuable. It reaches buyers directly, and it feeds the AI answers those buyers get next. For a dispensary or a med spa, the local subreddit is often a bigger influence on purchase than the brand's own website.

The line you should not cross

Here is where most advice on this topic goes wrong, so let me be direct.

Creating accounts to praise your own brand, seeding threads through an agency, coordinating upvotes, or posting recommendations without disclosing that you're affiliated - all of it violates Reddit's content policy and self-promotion rules. It also usually fails on its own terms. Moderators in active subreddits are experienced at spotting it, brand-new accounts recommending a product read as exactly what they are, and a ban takes the account and often the domain link with it.

There's a deeper problem too. The reason models weight Reddit is that it looks like authentic human experience. Astroturfing manufactures the one signal the whole system exists to detect. You are producing, at cost, the precise thing that gets filtered.

The FTC also treats undisclosed paid or incentivized endorsements as deceptive. In a regulated category you are already carrying enough compliance risk without adding that one voluntarily.

What actually works

Five moves, in the order I'd do them.

1. Find the threads that already rank

Search your category the way a customer would, then look at which Reddit threads surface in AI answers and in Google. Those threads are already load-bearing. Read them properly - they're the clearest free record you will ever get of the questions your buyers actually ask, in their words rather than your keyword tool's.

2. Show up as yourself, with the affiliation stated

Use a real named account. Say who you are and what you do in the comment where it's relevant. Most subreddits tolerate and often welcome a practitioner who answers questions well and discloses plainly. What they ban is the person pretending to be a neutral customer.

3. Answer the question, not the opportunity

The comments that get cited are specific, they include the tradeoff, and they name the case where the answer is different. If your comment would be worse without the product mention, cut the mention. Answering well repeatedly is how you become the account people tag when the question comes up again - and that pattern is what models pick up.

4. Bring the questions home

This is the highest-leverage move and almost nobody does it. Every question you see recurring on Reddit is a page you should own. Write the definitive answer on your own site, structured cleanly, with the specifics the thread was missing.

Two things happen. The engines cite Reddit threads, and they also cite what those threads link to - so a genuinely better resource gets pulled in. And you now rank for a question you know real buyers ask, instead of one a tool guessed at.

5. Earn the mention rather than placing it

If your product is good and visible, people will bring it up without you. Make that easy: be findable, be responsive when someone asks about you, and fix the reasons people complain. An unprompted recommendation from an established account is worth more than anything you could write about yourself, and it's the only version that survives scrutiny.

How to know if it's working

Reddit AEO doesn't show up in your analytics the way a campaign does, so measure it directly:

My own audit prompt covers the wider version of this if you want a structured way to run it.

The short version

Reddit is the most-cited domain in AI search because it reads as real people saying what actually happened. The strategy that follows from that is not a growth hack. It's participating honestly in the places your buyers already are, then owning the answers on your own site so the engines have something better to point at.

For restricted categories especially, that's not a consolation prize for being locked out of paid. It's a more durable asset than the ad account you can't have. If you want help building it, here's how we can work together.
