A dispensary lives or dies on local demand - the people within a short drive who could walk in today. Most dispensary marketing advice ignores that and copies national DTC tactics that get your accounts banned and never move a single customer through the door.
I've helped open 100+ dispensaries across 23 markets, and the growth that actually fills a store is local, owned, and compliant. Here's the playbook - the cannabis dispensary marketing that works when you can't buy your way in.
First, the two rulebooks
Every dispensary campaign has to clear two rulebooks: your state's cannabis regulations and each platform's advertising policy - and the platform's is almost always stricter. Meta and Google will reject or ban cannabis ads even where the sale is fully legal. Plan around that from day one. The full framework is in The Two-Rulebook Test and cannabis advertising rules by state.
Win the map: local SEO and Google Business Profile
Most cannabis purchases start with a nearby search - "dispensary near me," a maps result, a menu lookup. That makes local SEO the highest-return work in dispensary marketing, because it captures demand that already exists instead of manufacturing it on a channel that will ban you.
- Own your Google Business Profile. Correct category, hours, and address; a linked menu; real photos; and regular posts. It's the single biggest lever for "near me" visibility.
- Build local landing pages. One clear page per location and per major intent, written to answer what buyers actually type.
- Get your listings consistent. Same name, address, and phone everywhere the map reads - directories, menus, socials. Contradictions quietly sink your ranking.
Reviews are your ad budget
When you can't run paid ads, reviews do the persuading. They drive both local ranking and the decision to walk in. Ask every happy customer at the point of sale, make it one tap, and respond to all of them - the good and the bad. A responsive, five-star profile outsells a discount.
Own the customer you worked to earn
Foot traffic is the start; the money is in the second visit. Email, SMS, and a loyalty program are channels no ad network can switch off, so they're where a dispensary should concentrate. Capture the opt-in at the register and the menu, then bring people back with genuinely useful reasons, not just discounts. I break the owned-vs-rented split down in how to market a dispensary without getting banned on Meta.
The account you rent can be banned overnight. The list, the loyalty, and the reviews are yours.
Content that ranks - and educates
Cannabis dispensary content marketing does double duty: it earns local search traffic and it builds the trust a first-time buyer needs. Answer the real questions - product education, formats, effects, what to ask a budtender - in clear pages that keep working for years. This is also how you feed the newer discovery layer: AI answer engines.
Get found in AI search
"Best dispensary near me" is increasingly answered by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews - one synthesized recommendation, not ten links. If those engines don't know and trust your store, you're invisible before the customer sees a menu. Getting cited is its own discipline; I wrote the playbook in the 2026 guide to GEO.
Agency or operator?
Plenty of agencies will sell a dispensary a content calendar and a media plan. Fewer have actually opened stores. The question to ask is simple: have you run this, or only advised on it? For the full compliance-aware system - the one behind these openings - see The Dispensary Marketing Operating System, or how I work as a cannabis marketing consultant. And for the wider strategy this sits inside, start with cannabis marketing in 2026.
Dispensary marketing isn't about outspending anyone - you can't, and the platforms won't let you. It's about owning the map, the reviews, the list, and the AI answer, so demand finds you and comes back. Build those, and the store fills itself. If you want help building it, here's how we can work together.
